Automatic Updates for WordPress

What this is

You can configure WordPress to automatically update its core software, plugins, and themes — keeping your site secure without manual intervention.

WordPress core updates

  1. Go to WordPress → Manage → General → Manage versions.
  2. Choose:
  3. Update to minor versions only — installs security patches but not major new versions (safest option).
  4. Always update to the latest available version — installs everything automatically.

Plugin and theme auto-updates

Enable or disable auto-updates individually for each plugin and each theme from the Plugins and Themes management pages.

Good to know

  • Minor version updates (like 6.4.1 → 6.4.2) are security patches and rarely break anything.
  • Major version updates (like 6.4 → 6.5) can occasionally cause compatibility issues. If you're cautious, stick with minor-only for core and test major updates on a staging site first.
